Frequently Asked Questions

What is acupuncture?

It is often described as a means of relieving pain, but in fact it is used to treat a wide range of diseases, both chronic and acute conditions. The doctor inserts very fine acupuncture needles into a number of points on your body to stimulate acupuncture points which influence the physiological, emotional and psychological functions of the mind and body.

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are nothing like Western needles; they are very small and thin. A slight tingle is felt at the time and possibly a numbness at the site of insertion. This passes after a minute. The sensation shows that the correct point has been found ( the Qi point, pronounced Chee ). Most patients find the treatment very relaxing, which brings on a feeling of well-being. Treatment usually lasts twenty or thirty minutes.

How does it work?

The acupuncture points are specific locations where the meridians ( channels of energy ) come to the surface of the skin. The connections between them ensure that there is an even circulation of energy (Qi). If your flow of Qi is insufficient or unbalanced or interrupted, health problems occur. Acupuncture is used to restore this good flow or balance.
